How to Optimize your home office setup for productivity

Working from home has become the norm for many, since the 2020 pandemic. While it comes with many perks, staying productive can become very difficult with all of the at home distractions. Having the right setup can significantly influence your ability to stay focused, efficient and comfortable. Whether you’re a remote worker, freelancer, or photographer (like me), an optimized workspace is key to maintaining peak productivity.

Invest in an Ergonomic Chair and Desk

Sitting for long hours can put strain on your neck, back and shoulders, which is why an ergonomic chair and desk is a must. Choose a chair that supports your posture, has adjustable height, armrests and lumbar support. I have the Vert Ergonomic Chair from Uplift Desk and while it is on the expensive side for a desk chair, It has been well worth every penny. It has a great balance of style and functionality. Similarly, invest in a desk that is the right height for your needs or a sit to stand desk if you prefer to alternate between sitting and standing. I have the V2 Uplift Standing Desk by Uplift Desk and much like their chair it is stylish, functional and well worth the price tag. I love having the option to sit or stand through out the day, without sacrificing style and usability.

Choose the Right Tech Gear

Productivity can be hindered if your tech works against you. A reliable laptop or desktop computer is the foundation of your home office setup, but external peripherals like an external monitor, mouse and wireless keyboard can make a world of difference. There is a slew of ergonomic wireless keyboards and mice on the market, find the one you like the best. I have Apples Magic Mouse and keyboard. Both are aesthetically pleasing to look at, easy to use on many different surfaces and connects easily to my apple laptops and iPads. As far as external monitors go I have the LG 32” 4k UHD ultra fine Ergo Monitor. I like the ability to have the monitor off of my desk allowing for extra space for other things. The monitor having its own mountable desk stand makes it a winner for me.

Lighting

Natural light is best for productivity, but if your space doesnt get much sunlight, you should invest in high quailty LED lighting. Poor lighting can cause eye strain, fatigue and headaches, which in turn reduces overall efficiency. Adjustable desk or floor lamps that mimic natural lighting are great for those of us who like to work at night.

Pro tip: Position your desk near a window to maximize natural lighting.

Create a Distraction-Free Zone

It’s east to get distracted at home, especially if you share the space with others. Make your home office a distraction free zone by setting clear boundaries with family or roomates during working hours. Noise-canceling headphones are a great option if noise is an issue, and remove other non work related distractions like Tv’s or gaming consoles from your work space. I have found that using calming sounds in my noise canceling headphones work like a charm to keep me on task. Also, if you are able designate an at home work space that is separate from your living space like a spare room or specific corner.

Personalize Your Space

A personalized work space can increase motivation and make your home office feel less like a chore. Decorate your space with items that inspire you-whether its artwork, motivational quotes, shelves to display small items that you find inspiring and other furniture that completes the room. Also, if you are able designate an at home work space that is separate from your living space like a spare room or specific corner. Keep personal items minimal but meaningful to avoid visual clutter while still adding a personal touch.

Incorporate Breaks and Movement

Working long hours without a break can lead to burnout. Try scheduling short breaks to stretch, walk, or simply step away from your desk. I like to alternate from sitting to standing, walk in the sunshine in my backyard and do some yoga stretches. You can also try the Pomodoro Technique 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break.

Optimizing your home office for productivity is all about creating a space that supports both comfort and focus. By investing in the right tech, organizing your space and making it a place you enjoy being in, you will find it easier to stay productive and motivated throughout the workday.

By designing a workspace that works for you, you’re setting yourself up for success!
